Michael Kennedy's Last Act. Summit Journal

"Atop the mountain’s broad summit, Hayden throws a gangly arm around Michael’s stooped shoulders. Hayden grins for the picture, and Michael grimaces, both of them squinting a bit from the sun. Behind them, one smoke-smudged ridge extends into another, the over-exposed sky flattened into a bright white. There isn’t even a hint of the coming catastrophe."

SOME FAVORITES

The Climate Change Crush Conundrum. Los Angeles Times.

"A crush is a craving, an aspiration, a will to live. It is an empty calendar, mine for the filling. At least, that used to feel true. The more I see the swiftness of the climate crisis, the less sure I am of what’s reasonable to ask of the future."

Free Healing. The Baffler.

"She spoke about her experiences of finding discounts and researching her way into mostly free care with a tone like she’d leveled-up on a video game. Health care was an elaborate side quest; Madison had figured out how to solve it, and this left her with the quiet confidence of niche expertise—although it might just be a young person’s stubbornness. Madison is nineteen."

Flight Rituals. Earth Island Journal.

"No one was sure what the disappearance of the swifts meant, but everyone seemed to agree that it had to mean something. Were they really gone, or just gone from the one place we’d grown used to looking? Either the city was hollowed out, or our sight was. Out of view, many people speculated that the flock had abandoned our town forever. But we ought to have known, dealing with rituals as we were, not to trust what first met the eye."

Maker of Mountains. Summit Journal.

"Like Wheeler, I have pointed the lens of a camera at Mt. Sir Donald. Like him, I have obsessed over every nook and cranny of the range. Unlike him, I have never relied upon that marrow-deep intuition of where one ridge ends and another begins, hard-won through summers romping across the alpine, to commit murder."
